Special effects plugins for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Motion
The Saber Blade generator plugin lets you easily keyframe and rotoscope lightsaber effects onto your fan video Jedi battles.
Saber Blade is available in both a free and commercial paid version.
The free version is very basic and lets you set the colour to red, green or blue and adjust the overall width and glow of the blade.
The full-featured paid version lets you also individually adjust the width of each end of the blade for motion blur and perspective effects, adjust the tip pointiness, as well as set the colour to any colour you would like. Controls are also available to automatically animate flicker and vibration and create a cutout section of the blade for letting it appear to go behind other objects or people.
The Blaster Bolt generator plugin lets you easily animate laser bolt effects onto your Star Wars fan videos.
Blaster Bolt is available in both a free and commercial paid version.
The free version is very basic and lets you set the colour to red, green or blue and adjust the overall width and glow of the bolt.
The full-featured paid version lets you also individually adjust the width of each end of the bolt for perspective effects, as well as set the colour to any colour you would like. Controls are also available to add motion blur and create a cutout section of the bolt for letting it appear to go behind other objects or people.
The Space Wipes plugin transition lets you easily emulate most of the scene transitions from Star Wars.
Basic tutorials for each individual plugin are available above in the products section. As we make new tutorials we will post them here.
All of our plugins are deployed by an app called FxFactory. It works like Apple's App Store, but it is only for plugins. Just download, install and then launch FxFactory. Then find the FanFilmFX plugins and click download on each one you would like installed on your system. You can test out any plugins you want without buying them but there will be watermark on top of the video. The watermark can be removed by purchasing a license for the plugin and then restarting your editing application.
A tutorial for how to download and install FxFactory is available below.
Our names are Alex (age 12) and Ben (10). We are fans of Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, The Matrix, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Futurama, & the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We've been making our own fan films for a few years now and recently started designing VFX plugins with the help of our dad Tim Dashwood.
So far we have released a few of our Star Wars plugins but there are many more to come, including those inspired by our favourite movies.
We want to hear from you. In fact we would love to see how you have been using our plugins so please send us your YouTube link. If you have installation, purchasing or other technical problems please launch the FxFactory app and use "Contact Technical Support" from the Help menu. Frequently Asked Questions:
How can I add your plugins above my video in Premiere Pro?
Some of our plugins appear as "generators" in Apple's Final Cut Pro or Motion and can easily be layered on top of other video. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "generator" plugin in Adobe's Premiere Pro so we instead recommend that you create new "Transparent Video" and edit it on a new layer above your video and then apply our effect to it. This will let you customize the position and duration of the effect. Just watch the video in our tutorial section to see a demo.
Why can't I see the on-screen controls in Premiere Pro?
Even though you may have a clip selected in your sequence the onscreen control points will not display until you select the effect in the effect palette. Just watch the video in our tutorial section to see a demo.
Why aren't the on-screen controls in Premiere Pro coloured red and green?
Unfortunately we can't currently force the onscreen controls in Premiere Pro or After Effects to appear in any colour other than gray.
How can I add your plugins above my video in After Effects?
Some of our plugins appear as "generators" in Apple's Final Cut Pro or Motion and can easily be layered on top of other video. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "generator" plugin in Adobe's After Effects so we instead recommend that you create new "Solid" layer above your video layers in your composition and then apply our effect to it. This will let you customize the position and duration of the effect. If the duration of the effect needs to be shorter than your composition then trim the tail (and not the head) to the duration you require, then slide it to the position required. Just watch the video in our tutorial section to see a demo.
Will FanFilmFX plugins work on Windows OS?
Sorry. Our plugins are built using Mac OS X tools and will therefore not work in Windows. We have no plans to adapt them to Windows.
Can I try out the paid versions FanFilmFX plugins before I buy them?
Yes. Just download the plugin you want to try from within FxFactory and then quit and re-launch your editing app. Paid plugins will be fully functional but will have a transparent FanFilmFX watermark. You can work with the plugin in trial mode as long as you like. Purchasing the plugin and re-rendering in your host app will remove the watermark.
What other plugins are you planning to release? Can I make a suggestion?
We have been working on all sorts of Star Wars & Star Trek plugins for over a year. We are preparing to release transporter transitions, holographic projection, ghost jedi, digital binoculars POV, lightsaber collision blast, starfield generator, lightspeed, opening scroll, end credits, phaser beam, and more from other things we like like Portal, James Bond, the Matrix, Ghostbusters, BTTF and more. We've designed most of them in Apple's Motion for use in Final Cut Pro, but if we want them to work in Premiere Pro or After Effects then we need our dad's help to recreate them inside Quartz Composer. We only really have time to work on them on weekends, winter break, March break and in the summer so you can expect some new releases soon.
If you would like to suggest an effect, or just a feature in an existing effect, please just use the contact form.
What are the system and software requirements for my computer?
All of our plugins require a modern Macintosh computer running either OS X Mavericks 10.9 or Yosemite 10.10 with an ATI/AMD, NVIDIA or Intel HD graphics card with at least 512MB of VRAM. Less VRAM "might" work.
The plugins were originally designed for use in Apple's Final Cut Pro X v10.1x, but they will also work in Adobe After Effects CC, Premiere Pro CC and Apple Motion 5.1. If you would like to use the plugins in Final Cut Pro 7 then you will need to download FxFactory 4.1.9 and NOT upgrade it to v5.
